Being a 20-something is rough.

It can mean desperately finding a job straight school, moving into your first apartment, doing your own taxes, and other stressful things that come with being an adult.

It’s not all anxiety though; your 20s are also when you’re independent and most flexible, and you have a lot more freedom now than later on when you get more settled into your responsibilities.

This is the time to take charge of your life, to make opportunity rather than wait around for it. But how do you make the best of these ten years and achieve as much as you possibly can, when just yesterday, you Google searched “help my student loans are killing me”?

Sadly, there isn’t an instruction manual to making the best of your 20s (unless you count Google), but we do have plenty of parents, teachers and colleagues who have handed down their wisdom and advice over the years. Here are a few:

1. Stay organized

When you move into your first apartment or set up your retirement fund, get organized and stay organized! Whether you were before or not, now’s as good as any time to start.

Your pile of paperwork is still (relatively) small – invest in a filing cabinet and some sturdy binders to keep track of your documents, receipts, work portfolios and other important files.

Post-It notes and reminder apps are a great way to stay on top of your tasks, and the more you build a habit of good organization, the easier you’ll make it for yourself down the line.

2. Work on your weekends

It can be tempting to abandon all thoughts of work as soon as you’re off the job, but the best way to excel in a hectic work environment is to put in the extra time and effort.

No matter if you work with your hands or with spreadsheets, spare just a few hours of your weekend and consider how you can approach a problem next time you go back to work.

Maintain your work-life balance, but if you can map out solutions in your downtime, this makes you more productive when you actually step back into the workplace, and your co-workers will take notice.

3. Smile every day

We’ve all heard how smiling can predict a long lifespan, but someone who smiles a lot also appears more confident and successful to others. By smiling in workplace settings, you can make yourself more approachable to colleagues and potential business partners, and this can be an advantage for you in environments where open communication is key.

4. Write down your goals

As you build your credentials and take on more responsibilities, it can be hard to set time aside for yourself.

If you catch yourself thinking longingly about a dream vacation, write that down! You can come back to it, do some research, develop a savings plan, and work towards accomplishing your goal.

5. Workout and stay healthy

Working out is something that people either love or hate, and if you’re in the latter group, it can be hard to stick to a workout regimen that lasts longer than three weeks.

There are tons of tips out there for starting and maintaining a healthy lifestyle, so keep trying until you find one that suits you! Hold yourself accountable to your health, either with a friend or with commitment contracts stickK.

6. Ask for ways to improve

Often, the people with the best understanding of your performance are your coworkers. Your colleagues and supervisors see your work on a daily basis and may be able to provide some insights on how you can improve.

Schedule time with your workmates or supervisors and ask them how they think you can perform better.

By showing initiative and challenging yourself, you can gain more from your work experience and continue building your skills.

When you’re in your 20s, you have heaps of time, energy and creativity at your disposal. If you feel you’re in a rut, starting a side project may just be the way to get motivated again and direct your energy into something positive and challenging!

8. Stay up to date with the news

With constant, rapid-update news sources out there, there’s no more reason to be touch with what’s happening in the world.

Make a solid effort to collect your news from more than one or two sources, and try reading more articles that go beyond your regular interests.

If you’re strictly into finance articles, try subscribing to an arts and culture column (and vice versa). Expand your interests and stay well-informed.

9. Don’t take yourself too seriously

As a young adult, it can be frustrating when people older than you in your work and personal life don’t give you due credit.

It’s important to maintain professionalism, but don’t take yourself so seriously that you lose all enjoyment in your work! This is the time of your life to make mistakes and learn from them.

When you slip up, be able to forgive yourself and move past the mistake – your work will be better for it in the future, and your colleagues will appreciate your positivity.

10. Drink less

As with most things, alcohol is good in moderation, but as you get older (even in your 20s) the effects of drinking will be harder and harder to shake off in the morning.

The NIAAA reported that young adults in their early to mid-20s are most at risk for heavy or binge drinking.

If you go ten, try cutting back on the number of drinks you have, and stay watchful of your habits to be sure you’re always in control.

You will start to notice that when you drink less, your mind will be more clear and your productivity will start to increase.

11. Blog on a topic you’re passionate about

It’s easier than ever before to become a blogger. If you don’t want to commit to a personal blog or writing on a schedule, find an existing blog where you can contribute content.

Passionate about mountain biking? Local politics? Somewhere out there is a blog with your name on it.

By writing about your experiences and knowledge, you can share that bit of passion with someone else and establish your credibility as an expert in the field.

12. Meet with successful/established individuals

A great way to grow is to learn from others who have experience.

If you read an article by someone whose work you admire, reach out to them and ask for their insights in the field! Don’t sell yourself short by assuming it’s not worth the effort; if someone displays their email or phone number on their site, that means they’re willing to share their experiences, and it’s always nice to be appreciated by a fan.

13. Keep a journal

When you’re constantly busy, time slips away from you and before you know it, you’re another year older.

Keeping a journal gives you a chance to reflect on the good times and the bad, and when you look back on your past entries, you’ll realize how much you’ve grown since.

Even if you only write a sentence or two summarizing each day, having those little remembrances can be incredible when reflecting back.

14. Read a new book each month

Research has shown that reading can lower your stress levels, and keeping your mind stimulated helps you focus on day-to-day tasks. Set a pace and make a goal of reading at least one new book every month.

Explore different genres and authors! For non-avid readers, start out reading books that have TV or movie adaptations. It can be easier to stay engaged with the book if you have some context for the story.

(Game of Thrones, anyone?) If you’re feeling ambitious, join a local library’s book club so you can talk about your monthly read with other folks.

A little volunteer time goes a long way. Commit part of your weekend to working in your community and giving back where you can! There’s an opportunity for nearly everyone, from working in an animal shelter to tutoring students in underprivileged school districts.

In a study by UnitedHealth Group and the Optum Institute, researchers found that 76% of volunteers felt mentally and physically healthier and less stressed out after volunteering.

Make a routine of it by pairing up with a friend and carpooling – not only will it be a good opportunity to catch up with a friend, but you’ll feel better for it.

16. Reward yourself for major accomplishments

You work hard! It takes time, effort and commitment to finish a major goal, and sometimes, ticking that checkbox just isn’t satisfying enough.

After turning in a huge project or finally running that 5K race, treat yourself to an afternoon nap, buy a $1 roll of cookie dough and eat it raw, whatever makes you happiest.

It’s nice when your peers recognize your hard work, but it’s even nicer when you do too.

17. Find a mentor

Is there someone you admire in your life, an old teacher, a coworker or a relative? There’s always something to learn from the people we admire, and having a mentor can be extremely helpful when you’re not sure about something or just need a few words of encouragement. Invite your mentor for coffee and a chat, and be sure to sustain the relationship with regular updates and meetings. It’s a two-way street, and many people will love the opportunity to share their advice and help someone out.

18. Find a mentee

wise, you can take someone under your wing and share your own experiences! If you know someone who might want a mentor, offer to buy them lunch and talk about what’s going on in their life. This could be a younger sibling, one of the new interns at work or just someone who could use a friend. Be empathetic and open – you may learn just as much from your mentee as they will from you.

19. Travel

From journeying across the world to the other side of town, visit someplace you’ve never been before. Whatever your means, make time to hop on a plane or a city bus and challenge yourself to visit somewhere new to you.

Indulge in the area, visit local attractions, and eat its food. As author Scott Westerfeld wrote: “The best way to get to know a city is to consume it.

” By visiting new places, you get an exciting opportunity to learn about yourself and the world around you, and the best part is that you can still travel on a budget!

20. Never stop learning

Your knowledge is one of your greatest strengths. Keep your mind sharp and active by continuing your education. There’s a multitude of free, online classrooms out there Coursera, tutorials on , or apps Duolingo if you want to learn a language.

If you prefer an in-person experience, check with a local community center for informal lessons. Even if you can’t commit to a class, read up on programming or Roman architecture each night before you go to bed.

Your mind will stay active as long as you keep it learning!

Implement these values: Now that you know, what you value and what you need to do, to move ahead with your goals, it is time you implement them. Brainstorm to find out ways you can act upon your values. For example, if you wish to serve people, you should volunteer in some NGO to implement your developmental plans.

When you are still in your twenties, you have the time to discover what brings you joy. As you grow old, your options are limited. A person in their twenties is more aware and independent than a person with family and loans to pay.

It is very crucial for your personal development that you discover what sparks joy in your life. If you’ll be more self-aware, it’ll be easy for you to do things passionately. A person who loves what he does is more resilient and less stressed.

However, it is completely fine to find out the spark of your life even after your twenties. Life never stops, and there’s no right time for anything.

In your 20s, you are able to take on new forms of independence, responsibility, and, most of all, undergo immense personal development.

So how exactly do you take these proper steps to pursue personal growth in your 20s?

1. Find a Passion

Finding something you are passionate about is an essential part of personal growth. Being in your 20s, you have tons of opportunities to explore this.

Take on a fulfilling job, volunteer in your community, learn about a social issue… figure out what sets YOUR soul on fire. Finding your “purpose” in life can feel scary but, believe me, when you do, you will just know.

Figuring this out in your 20s can really help to guide you in the coming decades of your life.

2. Ask Yourself “Who Am I?” Questions

By this I mean really asking yourself the hard stuff.

The “who am I”, “what do I want in life”, “what do I believe”, “what do I support”, “why do I think this way” type of questions.

Oftentimes, taking this step towards personal growth can be daunting. It isn’t always comfortable or easy. This can include really calling yourself out on any toxic traits you may have.

For me, I have had to acknowledge some past trauma and work through it. Journaling for self-discovery can be really helpful during this process.

3. Find Independence

This is probably the biggest transformation I have experienced as far as personal growth in your 20s goes.

Independence can be scary.

Plain and simple.

Independence in your 20s can look different for everyone. Maybe it’s going away to school, moving your parents’ house, moving to a new state by yourself, or even just going to the doctors’ without your mom for the first time (this is traumatic, I know

Turning 30 is a lofty milestone for many young adults. The BIG 3-0 marks a significant change for millennials as they transition from wandering twenty-somethings to (hopefully) established adults. This metamorphosis doesn’t happen overnight, however.

It’s a gradual development that slowly occurs in phases of growth. Although we all may feel adults in our early twenties, the truth is most of us won’t have it all figured out until our early thirties, at best.

Our twenty-something years contain a hodgepodge of experimentation, trial-and-error, and mistakes. We learn many important lessons and set a variety of goals for ourselves along the way.

In truth, our twenties—a defining decade—set us up for our future, established self.

In planning for becoming a thirty-something someday there are several important goals everyone should accomplish. Some of these goals are a bit straightforward, while others will require deep discovery within our very souls. It takes time, patience, and belief in yourself to truly achieve these objectives.

1. Travel. 

If you have an opportunity to travel during your twenties, jump on it! There’s no greater experience than a chance to see the world through a unique, different lens.

Traveling brings culture to your life and opens your mind and soul to a new reality. If you travel overseas, a foreign vacation or semester abroad really is divine. You’re bound to return home with new ways of thinking and a taste of cultural optimism.

2. Establish a 401K or retirement fund. 

Thinking about your retirement account in your early twenties ly seems silly. Why should we worry about something that’s decades away? Newsflash: the earlier you begin saving, the more money you’ll have when you do retire.

Research retirement options. 401K and 403B accounts will deduct a percentage of your income early on and tuck it safely away into your account.

Additionally, if your company contributes to your retirement funds they’ll match up to a certain percentage.

Consider how rapidly an account will grow with 3% of your income and 3% of your company’s contribution. Your financial future will begin to look brighter!

3. Master the art of cooking.

Up until now you’ve probably only dabbled in cooking. To an extent, all twenty-somethings have. We are accustomed to heating up Ramon noodles and sticking a greasy grilled cheese sandwich together in our dorms. After you move college and you parents’ home, however, the need to cook becomes very real.

Before you turn 30 you should be comfortable following recipes and making dinner from scratch. No, this dinner should not come in the form of a cardboard box or takeout container. Learn how to cook pasta dishes from scratch, grilled chicken, and steamed veggies.

There’s something to be said about the nostalgia of a home-cooked meal. You don’t have to be a sous chef to master the art of cooking. Simply obtain basic recipes and tweak to your liking.

4. Understand your body and health. 

Understanding your body before you turn 30 is critical. You should actually learn about your health long before that, but we’ll cut you some slack! Your health should be among the most—if not the most—important things in your life. Without strong health, your body will be incapable of doing anything.

You need to know the warning sides of poor health and be certain you’re taking proper care of yourself. Monitor your body regularly. Be positive you know the difference between serious cramps versus common aches and pains. Don’t allow an area of noticeable pain or discomfort go unchecked for too long. This is the only body you have. Be good to it.

6. Live on your own. 

Living on your own is an exciting experience all in itself! There’s so much to look forward to, such as decorating your own home, basking in independence, and learning to care for yourself without help from your parents or roommates.

If possible, live alone for a chapter during your twenties. You should be comfortable living independently before bunking with friends or moving in with a significant other. When you live alone you truly understand who you are and the life you want to lead.

7. Apply for a credit card. 

While many people think of credit cards as a boatload of debt and the forever enemy, credit cards can actually be a very positive addition to your life.

Apply for a credit card during your twenties. If you can, limit your use of the card to filling up your gas tank or buying groceries, exclusively. Use your credit card in controlled transactions and pay off your balance as soon as it posts to your account. Even with small, controlled purchases you are building credit.

By borrowing money and paying it off quickly credit bureaus will see you are a responsible borrower, making it easier for you to apply for a home or car loan someday. Plus, paying off your credit card quickly eliminates the risk of being stuck with high interest rates.

Build your credit slowly, and remember to only use your card to purchase items you are confident you can quickly pay off!

8. Have at least one relationship. 

You should make it your personal mission to have an adult relationship during your twenties. Don’t date someone at random, but definitely dip your toes in the dating pool when you have the chance.

Dating in your twenties is a constant source of experience. You learn the ins and outs of cohabitation, meshing different interests, resolving conflict, and discovering your desires. Even when a solid adult relationship comes to an end, through heartbreak many twenty-somethings find themselves.

You’ll learn that perhaps you need to be with someone who loves to travel, or maybe you need a person who’s very affectionate. Dating in your twenties will help you discover the type of person you ultimately want to marry, if that’s important to you.

9. Graduate college or continue your education in some way.

Not everyone has the opportunity to finish a degree in their twenties, but if you do make it your priority. Going back to school later in life is not impossible by any means, but it is more of a challenge for many. Balancing work, family, stress, money, AND college can be too much for some adults.

If college isn’t the right path for you, there are many other ways to continue your education outside of school. Learning platforms Skillshare, Coursera, and Udemy offer many beneficial classes and learning opportunities.

10. Know how to take proper care of your vehicle.

It’s critical to know the basic anatomy of your vehicle. Whether you’re driving a beat up car, monstrous truck, or energy-efficient smart car, be certain you have the key parts locked in your mind.

You’ll want to know how to change a tire in an emergency, just as much as you’ll need to know the first steps to take if your car is overheating or if you’ve been in an accident.

Read your vehicle’s manual, brush up on the parts under the hood, and remember to do the simple things regular oil changes, filter replacements, and putting the right gasoline in your engine.

11. Create an emergency fund. 

Of the many financial goals every adult should make, creating an emergency fund is on the top of the list. You never know what’s going to happen.

Life is unpredictable, and as such you may find yourself in a financial rut. Whether your car breaks down and needs some TLC, or you get laid off at work and can’t pay your bills, you’ll be hurting if you don’t have a cash stash somewhere.

Start with a goal of saving three month’s worth of your expenses. If you can afford to set aside more, by all means please do. Hopefully you’ll never need to use it, but it’s best just in case.

12. Read more. 

It seems that many twenty-somethings read less and less as they migrate away from their college studies. When is the last time you read a book? If it’s been awhile, remedy that ASAP!

Reading is essential. The act itself is leisurely and relaxing. Books bring culture, wisdom, and experience to our lives in a way that’s different from music or film. Not only is reading incredibly healthy for you, but it’s also beneficial.

The more you read, the more you’ll know. It’s a form of growth un anything else.

13. Learn to say “no.” 

Too many of us say yes to absolutely everything we are offered: jobs, dates, commitments, and the list goes on and on. There’s no real reason why we say yes to doing things we may not want to other than making another person happy. Why do we burden ourselves with this nonsense? Stop it! Before turning 30 you should learn to say no.

Turn down job offers that don’t fit your scope of practice. Deny commitments you can’t fulfill. Learn the value of saying no when it’s what you truly need to say. It’s important to learn to answer honestly.

14. Discover your morals, beliefs, and desires in life. 

You are in control of what you believe in, your morals, and the things in life you desire. Don’t be shy to take a risk in discovering these parts of who you are.

There is no right way to live, therefore you must choose the path that is best for you.

When it comes to religion, milestones, goals, and beliefs you need to lean on yourself and be confident in your position. It’s your life. Live it honestly.

15. Determine who your real friends are. 

By the time you turn 30 you should have a strong handle of who your true friends are. If you don’t, it’s wise to figure that out before your twenties slip away.

Don’t waste your time staying in one-sided relationships where you always give and others take. Learn to put your foot down and rid of toxic relationships when necessary. Life is far too short to surround yourself with negativity or fake friendships. Banish those you can do without and make room for the genuine people who truly love and respect you.

16. Schedule health visits regularly. 

As far as health goals go, by your 30th birthday you should be well versed in visiting your PCP and dentist regularly. Don’t skip your physical or dental cleanings because you think everything is fine.

Unless you work in the field, chances are your medical opinion is as useful as the Internet. Be smart and visit your primary care for routine check ups.

17. Learn that happiness comes from within. 

Happiness is one of the most important facets of life. However, being happy must come from within. We can’t expect other people, pets, objects, or things to make us happy. We have to learn to be happy all on our own.

By the time you turn 30, let’s hope you believe this to be as true as it is. Learn to be happy with YOU. The rest will follow.

18. Capture moments in photographs. 

Millennials nowadays photograph everything. From dinner last night to apple picking over the weekend, twenty-somethings are posting photos on their social media accounts and blogs regularly. If you do this, excellent! If you don’t, it’s best to start.

Photographs—even if not shared publicly—are treasures. It’s wise to capture as many moments over the years as you can.

19. Accept and love yourself. 

Love from others feels so good. We cherish the way our significant others love us just as much as we value the love we receive from relatives and friends. No love, however, is greater than the love you have for yourself. By the time you turn 30 you should absolutely adore yourself.

You made it through the sticky teen years and troubling, wandering twenties. By 30, you’re more familiar with who you are and should love the person you’ve become over the years. Accepting and loving yourself is the key to success and happiness in life. Don’t forget how far a little self-love goes!

20. Set more goals. 

By the end of your twenties you will have achieved a handful of goals (hopefully these ones).

When your 30th birthday rolls around you should plan on making more. We accomplish goals so we can set new ones. That’s the beautiful cycle of goal-setting. When you’ve reached your short-term and long-term goals, don’t forget to create new things to work toward. We’re always growing; always moving forward.
