Methamphetamine, also called crystal meth, or meth is a dangerous and highly addictive stimulant. The drug can be smoked, injected, or snorted, and when taken, it creates a feeling of increased energy and euphoria.

The base component in meth is pseudoephedrine (found in decongestants and allergy meds), and it is produced by mixing toxic household chemicals such as ammonia, paint thinner, and acetone.

When you think of how meth is made, you may picture an old trailer in the middle of nowhere filled with pills, dust, coffee filters, and toxic fumes pouring a make-shift lab. Now, another method of manufacturing meth, called “shake and bake,” can be done as easy as taking a ride in your car.

The Genesis of “Shake and Bake”

Making meth typically involves obtaining several hazardous and flammable chemicals such as acetone, anhydrous ammonia, ether, and lithium. The mixture of these chemicals often causes explosions, and even if a meth lab is shut down, the toxins remain in the environment for a very long time.

To reduce methamphetamine production, “Congress passed the Combat Methamphetamine Epidemic Act in 2005, requiring pharmacies and other retail stores to keep logs of purchases of products containing pseudoephedrine and limiting the amount of those products someone can purchase per day (National Institute on Drug Abuse).”  

To circumvent this new law, meth manufacturers decided on a more mobile and cheaper method of creating the drug.

Instead of open flames, hundreds of expensive pills, piles of chemicals, and toxic fumes that can be detected for miles, people now create meth in their car with a few crushed pseudoephedrine pills, a lithium battery, and some household items.

The ingredients are put in a sealed container (usually a soda bottle), which is flipped upside-down to create the chemical reaction needed to turn the toxic components into the drug. After this happens, the person will drive around to release the fumes until the meth forms.

Once made, they throw out the bottle and drive away. However, this “shake and bake” method is just as dangerous as creating it in a lab, and law enforcement is also put at serious risk. 

The Dangers of the “Shake and Bake” Method

The chemical reaction going on inside the bottle or container causes an extremely intense amount of pressure to build up after flipping or shaking it. If the cap or lid becomes loose or the bottle is shaken the wrong way, and any oxygen gets inside of it – it can explode. Since this all takes place in a car, no one can run away when the bottle ruptures causing issues such as:

  • If the person is driving and the bottle explodes, serious injury or death can happen to both the driver and anyone on the road. 
  • Law enforcement officials are at just as much risk of injury during a search. They may not realize what the bottle contains, and if opened, will rupture and release toxic chemicals.
  • Discarded bottles are dangerous, and law enforcement has asked those who find these bottles to leave them alone and call the police.

One story the Missouri paper, The Riverfront Times (2010), of a man who caught fire while making meth in his SUV drives home the extreme dangers of the “shake and bake” method, “When he twisted the cap, enough oxygen evidently seeped in to initiate combustion: The sparks ignited the ether vapors from the starting fluid that were still floating around the cab of the Blazer, scalding his entire upper body, as well as the faces of his companions, who bailed out the front doors of the SUV as it skidded to a stop.” 

The article goes on to explain the massive injuries the man incurred from the explosion, “he suffered severe burns on his arms, hands, face and left calf.

Eighty percent of his lungs were damaged from inhaling chemical fumes. He had no eyelashes, no eyebrows and no vision in his left eye.

Doctors had replaced the irreparably damaged tissue on his hands and forearms with skin grafts from his thighs.”

Meth Addiction and Health Risks

Creating meth is a major environmental hazard and dangerous; however, ingesting meth can be deadly. Some of the health risks of meth include (but are not limited to):

  • Diminished appetite that can lead to malnutrition and extreme weight loss
  • Anxiety and paranoia
  • Tooth decay or “meth mouth”
  • Mood problems and irritability
  • Confusion and hallucinations
  • Convulsions and increased blood pressure
  • Cardiovascular problems
  • Damage to the liver, kidneys, lungs, and brain damage

Those with a severe meth addiction can also experience formication or a tingling sensation that feels similar to insects crawling under the skin. This prickly feeling is followed by “crank bugs” or hallucinations of bugs crawling under the skin.

Users start picking at their skin to eliminate the “bugs” they think they feel within their arms or face. Most long-term meth users have skin that has lost its ability to repair itself.

As they pick at the surface, open wounds begin to form (called meth sores) and take a long time to heal.

Meth addiction can happen quickly and can be extremely damaging to your health – even deadly.

An estimated 964,000 people aged 12 or older had a methamphetamine use disorder in 2017 – they reported clinically significant impairment, including health problems, disability, and failure to meet responsibilities at school, work, or home as a result of their drug use.

This number is significantly higher than the 684,000 people who reported having methamphetamine use disorder in 2016 (National Institute on Drug Abuse). Treating addiction to methamphetamine should be handled under the supervision of healthcare professionals.

What Is Meth, And Why Is It So Dangerous?

Meth is a drug that is produced in a chemical process and is a stimulant that directly affects a person’s central nervous system. Because it’s a stimulant, it produces short term effects surges of energy and alertness, rapid breathing, rapid and/or irregular heart rate, and potentially decreased appetite.

One of the reasons it’s so dangerous is how addictive it is, and another is how short its effects are (which plays into how addictive it is). Another reason, though, is how easy it is for people to make the drug at home, in a small garage, or even in their car, but also because of how toxic the process and its waste is.

What Is Shake And Bake Meth?

The “shake and bake” method simplifies the process of making meth and makes it a lot more mobile than other processes. When not using this method, someone producing meth needs quite a bit of equipment: things that it is difficult to hide the purchase of, including specific chemicals.

The reason it’s called “shake and bake” methamphetamine is the chemical processes that are used to create meth are generally taking place inside a two-liter bottle, the kind that is most commonly sold containing carbonated drinks. Someone puts the ingredients inside, shakes the bottle, and lets it “bake” for a certain length of time. When they shake the bottle, it is combining the ingredients.

Once that process finishes, the bottle will end up with a small amount of meth inside. Even though this method produces a much smaller amount of the drug than other methods, there are other factors that make it a commonly used production method.

Taking the complex process of creating meth and shrinking it to the sizes of a pop bottle means it can go nearly anywhere a person can. Authorities struggle to keep the shake and bake meth method under control for that obvious reason, but also because the “tools” so to speak are so ordinary.

As reported by NPR, the mobility of the process is only part of what makes it so appealing to those who want to “shake and bake” meth. Another, however, is the speed. It can be done quickly, and since it requires much less measuring or difficult chemistry, it’s an ideal method for someone looking to get the drug quickly.

“It’s so easy,” Dennis Potter, a man interviewed for the NPR story said. It only takes close to an hour, and when it’s done the bottle will have “at least several grams of meth.” In that same story, however, Potter is an example of the dangers that can result when the “shake and bake” meth process when it goes wrong.

Shake And Bake Meth Dangers

Meth is a product of a chemical process, we already mentioned up top. Not only is it using dangerous chemicals to break down substances, but in the process, it is producing dangerous chemicals as well. A larger meth lab, one that isn’t in a pop bottle, can sometimes be recognizable from a distance due to these chemicals.

The Nevada State Attorney General says meth labs can often be discovered due to the smells they are producing, which can be similar to rotten eggs or even cat urine. This is because two of the smells often associated/produced with meth labs are ammonia and ether.

Houses that contain meth labs, therefore, need strong and/or unusual ventilation to ensure the chemicals are being filtered/vented out, rather than staying inside. So imagine putting a version of that process, one that is capable of killing you, into a bottle that you shake up.

Burns, Blindness, And Lethal Meth Labs

“The bottle took on an orange glow, and within seconds an explosion blew the walls off the room and set [him] on fire.”

That’s what happened to David Potter when he tried to make shake and bake meth. He spent over a month recovering from the extensive burns he suffered when a bottle exploded while making shake and bake meth. He had to get multiple skin grafts, and was lucky to survive.

The Oregon State Health Authority says, no matter the method, every version of meth will contain chemicals falling into three categories:

  • solvents
  • metals and salts
  • strong acids or bases

All the chemicals that fit into these categories can cause an extensive amount of damage, from something as light as eye irritation to the extreme burns David Potter experienced—and yes, even death.

Another danger of shake and bake meth is the toxic leftovers from when meth is made. It’s possible for someone who wasn’t involved in the meth production to be affected by it, especially in a situation where someone has made meth with the shake and bake method and discarded the container they used.

There is still more to worry about, though. Producing meth also produces at least between five and seven pounds of “chemical waste,” which can find its way into water and other situations that can impact the environment. Since the shake and bake meth method is even more mobile than other methods, these risks are heightened.

If you see a discarded plastic bottle and think it may have been used to produce meth, do not touch it. Call the police and explain the situation to them, or even call your local board of health to get information about someone who can dispose of it safely.

Getting Help

Meth can take hold of you quickly due to how short its effects last, only because this can lead to a cycle of crashing and bingeing. Since meth addiction affects a person’s central nervous system so quickly, but only produces a euphoric effect for 30 or so minutes, the urge to use more can hit quickly.
